I'm researching my family, the Barnes at Barnes' Shop on the corner of Chapel Street and the Glovers who ran a tea room and Post Office from their house, on Station Road just up from the Moon pub. My Gran talked a lot about working in the shop during the war and all the rationing. They sold sweets and groceries and had 2 cottages for rent in their yard. She had an older brother and they went to Spondon House School. My Grandpa's parents lived in the house opposite the Moon pub and ran a tea room and Post Office for the workers at the Celanese. The house has long gone but it was called Spondon House and had a tennis court. He went to the Catholic School in Derby. Any information at all would be wonderful!

My aunt used to talk about the Glovers, who had a shop on Station Road, Stephanie. If it is the same family, they had a son named John.
As a schoolgirl, my aunt went to London with the family and my grandfather did quite a lot of joinery work in the shop for them. I think they eventually moved to the London area, but I can't be sure.
Sorry I can't remember any more information, but if this is the right family, I'll ask my older cousins, who may remember a lot more.

Thank you so much for replying and yes it is the right family - John was my grandfather. I am still trying to find out when they left Spondon and what happened to the shop. It is fantastic to know that your family had connections with them and any other information you have would be very gratefully received. Thank you again!

I'd just like to say thank you for replying to my post. It looks like Spondon house aka The Rajah and Natwest Bank has been knocked down to make way for a new housing development. I would also be very grateful if 'jj' could see if her relatives have any more information regarding the Glovers. My mother was over the moon to hear that you had family who knew them. Mum was one or two in most of the photos of her at the house and stories such as yours bring them to life. I have since found that Great Grandma and Grandpa moved away to Sandiacre but their land was compulsory purchased to make way for the M1 so we all drive through their front garden! My grandfather John, who married Marion Barnes of 'Barnes' shop' moved to Royal Hill Road. Great Grandma and Grandpa Glover died in their early nineties and although he was a soft giant, she was a bit of a battle axe - or so I thought being 10!! He was the first accountant at the Celanese I think. Anyway, should anyone have any more information about the Barnes' or Glovers I would love to hear it, no matter how small.

I can confirm that the two cottages are still there in the yard. I live in one of them.
