There use to be 2 small wooden cabins close to Spondon rail station that sold newspapers and other items. I remember one was burnt down. Does anyone have any information on these, particularly who ran them. I'm after information to help me with my wife's family tree. Thanks

When I lived in Spondon back in back in the mid 60s there was one hut on the canal land that sold only news papers to people coming home from Celanese back then about 5,000 people worked at Celanese, and to people coming home from work on the train. It belonged to a man who had a shop in Chapel Street opposite the Prince of Wales, who sold only newspapers & magazines, he also delivered them all over Spondon. A lot of school children worked for him. Who had it after him I Don't know.

I have been told that one of the cabins was run by a Mr and Mrs Whiteman. Does anyone know about this couple?

The cabin was owned by Doug & Sylvia Whiteman. They also ran a courier business in the eighties and lived on Derwent Rise. Doug passed away several years ago.

The wooden cabin further down on the oppopsite side to the Whiteman's was owned by Mr Wilson of Beeches Avenus and he sold confectionary and cigarettes, he retired and his son carried on with the business and I undersatnd Whitemans took tis over. I knew Dougie from his days at RR, he use to drive a pickup taking the mail round.
