Today's Derby Telegraph reports that a mystery backer is offering to spend £10m to save Elvaston Castle and preserve it for public use. The backer, described as a UK-based international business, has been negotiating with Elvaston Castle Estate Trust (ECET) to provide enough funding to take over the castle from Derbyshire County Council. However, the council has said the deadline for making a bid passed back in July, 2003, and they are unable to accept any more.
